Fresh clashes break out in Tunisia amid EU criticism

AFP: Fresh clashes break out in Tunisia amid EU criticism: "Fresh clashes broke out in Tunisia Monday as the European Union condemned a government crackdown on weekend protests over food and jobs that killed at least 14 people.
Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse demonstrators in Kasserine, Thala and Regueb, while security forces were on alert in the capital after the weekend violence, the deadliest since protests erupted mid-December.
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said in Brussels she was concerned about events in Tunisia and called for the release of detained protesters.
A union member died Monday in a hospital in Kasserine, 290 kilometres (180 miles) south of Tunis, after being shot in protests on Sunday, said Sadok Mahmoudi from the regional branch of the UGTT workers union.
A 'great number' of people wounded in the unrest were being treated in the hospital, which was put under army control, he said."
